Elastomeric in-shear couplings such as TB Wood’s® SureFlex® couplings are one of the most popular coupling types used today, and with good reason. However, this coupling as designed will not support a fire pump’s objective.

Couplings relying on all-elastomeric materials to connect fire pumps have temperature limitations and can fail during a fire, severing the connection between the pump and motor. In fact, the use of all-elastomeric couplings was prohibited in all fire protection standards since 2009.
