Replacing a Drive? Consider Optimized Drive Selection

In many instances – especially with older B and C-section belt drives – optimized drive selection permits retrofits to a smaller drive with lower initial cost, less bearing load, and higher energy efficiency.
– In a recent project we were able to retrofit a 6-groove, C section drive to a 3-groove, 5V section drive at an initial cost savings to the end-user of over 56%.

Replacing a Motor? Consider Best-in-Class, Energy Efficient Baldor® EM-G and EHM Motors

A technical note: In the past most motors were nameplated 208-230/460. With limited exceptions, under current DOE regulations, motors are now nameplated either 200V or 230/460V.

Why does this matter? NEMA MG 1 – 2021 in section 12.44.1 states that “alternating-current motors shall operate successfully under running conditions at rated load with a variation in the voltage up to ±10 percent of rated voltage …”, allowing a motor to operate in locations that may have an inconsistent voltage supply or susceptible to a voltage drop or voltage spike.

So, if you have a building with 208V service and replace an existing 208-230/460 motor with a 230/460 motor, the new motor will only be able to handle voltage drops down to 207V (the -10%). When voltage drops below this, as is often the case in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, especially in summer, the result will be either significantly reduced motor life or catastrophic failure. A 200V motor, on the other hand, is designed by DOE rule and NEMA standard to handle drops down to 180V (their -10%).

For supervisory and maintenance staff, we offer, again at no charge, detailed introductions to these products as well as hands-on training on belt installation, belt tensioning, belt alignment, and worn sheave identification, all key drivers of energy efficiency.
